Would you take up arms to fight for the United States of America without precondition?

Question by Flags of Our Fathers: Would you take up arms to fight for the United States of America without precondition?
Yes, I served from 1970 to 1991, including one combat tour in Vietnam. No regrets!!
CHEVY P - That "traitor" flag", as you put it, is an integral part of U.S. history. Quit being so politically correct, you'll live longer.

How do you reconcile your position with General Lee's?

Just wondering.

That flag that you describe as "an integral part of U.S. history" was in fact flown by several states claiming that they were NOT part of the United States.

And it was flown by those few states for only four years out of 233. That's only 1.7% of U.S. history.

How is that brief period within a minority of states an "integral part" of U.S. history?

No. The Waffen SS served their country without conditions too. See where that got them.

  5. Chevy P says:

Why are you flying that traitor flag along with the flag of our country in your avatar?

  6. cantcu says:

Yes, Vietnam in 1966-1967. US Army from 1960 until 1968! You weren’t there in the 1960′s and before Tet! Perhaps you don’t understand!

There were a lot of people with US before their serial number who didn’t want to be there. Many came home in body bags.

Iraq is not Vietnam, though it too was started based on a lie!

I have a lot of regrets. It ruined my life!

  7. Andre B says:

Absolutely not. If the fight is not just, I will not take up arms.

  12. student_of_life says:

Absolutely not. An obvious precondition, which I hope any person would require before fighting for a side, would be that the side (the United States) is in the right. Intentionally fight on the wrong side (i.e. side which is committing the (most) wrongs and/or is an unjustified aggressor) is unconscionable.

I’m not saying whether the US has been the bad guy or not. All I am saying is that fighting for any side without precondition is pretty clearly immoral.

  13. Michael P in NJ says:

I would, but the armed forces wouldn’t take me, because I’m 4-F.

As for that flag, it represents men in the 19th Century who preferred to betray their country rather than treat all men as equal, and men in the 20th Century who committed murder out of bigotry. There MUST be a symbol of Southern heritage out there that does not also represent those things: Find it. If you truly have no regrets about the United States of America, then throw away that flag of a “country” that went to war against it.

  14. quest for truth gal says:

You blocked my sister, Chevy P, so she can’t answer you. That’s rather cowardly.

I’ll answer on her behalf. The people who fought under that battle flag were guilty of treason as defined by the US Constitution. They were traitors and, yes, that is part of US history.

  15. cattledog says:

The Confederate States of America were defeated BY the United States. They fought the government and they lost… that flag is traitorous considering that hundreds of thousands of lives died protecting the Union flag. They would not have died if it was not for the traitors who took arms against the Union flag. It is insane to fly them together.

  16. Diana says:

In a New York second, I also agree with you on Chevy P, It is part of history. My hat to those who died on both sides for what they believed in. I’m always looking for those who share my interest in the civil war era, but that’s another subject

  17. Fonz says:

Yes… Either of the flags you hold, I would fight for..

  18. Chris F says:

Do you mean would I fight for no reason other than because I was told to? For instance if someone said, “Join the army and kill for us. Don’t ask why or if you should, just do it because we said so” If so, my answer is no.

If my freedoms and way of life were being directly threatened and were at high risk of ceasing to exist and I knew why I was fighting, Yes.
