What’s the best tour company for holidays to peru and Bolivia?

Question by Me, not you.: What's the best tour company for holidays to peru and Bolivia?
Hi,
My friend and i are going to go to Peru and maybe Bolivia in August and we're trying to find the best deal. We're looking to trek the Inca trail, spend a few days in the amazon and cycle down the most dangerous road in the world.
Can anyone recommend any tour operators for this? The cheaper the better but not to skimp on safety or quality. Or if you know a better way to do it that would be good too.
Thanks.

Hi. Trekking the Inca Trail in August is going to be tough because there is a quota and reservations that fill up long in advance. Still, some agencies might be able to fit you in. Generally, those are the more expensive ones. I can recommend my friends at Solandino (www.solandino.com), who once fit me and a group in for an August trip on short notice.

If you arrive in Cuzco without having previously arranged an Inca Trail hike, there are other great hiking options around Cuzco that can be organized on a moment's notice. Salcantay is a nice hike, finishing in Machu Picchu. Also Choquequirao is becoming more popular, with a route that also finishes near Machu Picchu. My favorite hike in the area is Ausangate and Sibinacocha, but that doesn't take you anywhere near Machu Picchu. There are dozens of agencies in Cuzco that can arrange these hikes for you for relatively cheap (0). My friends at Solandino can do the same. The same agencies will also gladly arrange a jungle trip directly from Cuzco.

Getting to Bolivia from Cuzco is not that difficult. You can bus or fly to Juliaca, then overland to the border (I recommend Copacabana), then on to La Paz. In La Paz, on Sagarnaga street, there are also dozens of trekking agencies and everybody sells that biking trip down the mountain. Just take a good look at the bikes before you depart, inspect the brakes, the tires, the chain. Make sure everything is tight. Beware that in Bolivia, there are frequent road blockages due to strikes. When I was there a few weeks ago, many tourists were stranded in Coroico for several days. I had problems getting out of La Paz and back to Peru. It can be a headache.

If you have questions about particular agencies, or want to find recommendations, join the South American Explorer's Club (www.saexplorers.org). They have a good clubhouse in Cuzco and are very helpful in assisting visitors with all of those questions, even before you leave.

Tips for studying abroad in Tours?

Question by Sam: Tips for studying abroad in Tours?
I'm studying abroad this summer (Tours, France in June and Burkina Faso, Africa in July). Any tips or recommended reading?

Answer by sitcpsitcb
Brush up on your language skills! You will get so much more out of the experience if you speak in French the entire time.

In Tours and especially in Ouagadougou (or whatever city) people are much less likely to speak English than they would be in Paris. People will be much friendlier and you'll be much less stressed if you're able to communicate easily. If the region of Burkina Faso that you'll be visiting has a regional dialect, learn some polite phrases.

Finally, a good etiquette guide is essential, particularly if you'll be on your own or dealing with daily living things (opening a bank account, renting an apartment) without much support. Usually travel guides have some basic tips, but if you're going to be there for an extended period of time, but you might want to look for more information. CultureShock is one series that is out there for many countries, but I'm sure there are more.

I Love Touring Italy – Springtime In Molise

I Love Touring Italy - Springtime In Molise

Molise is a small region of central Italy that lies on the Adriatic Sea. The resort city of Termoli is home to 30 thousand people, many of whom are devoted to San Giuseppe and have altars to him in their homes. Here many celebrate his saint's day by praying and singing all through the night of March 18th. It is traditional to invite everyone the following day to enjoy a real feast.

The village of Capracotta, population about one thousand, at the other end of the region celebrates this day very differently when cross-country skiers from all across Italy meet and run a national relay race for the E. Angelaccio cup. The village of Montemitro, population about 500, celebrates its patron Saint Lucia on April tenth when a procession carries an ancient statue of the saint to a little rural church. This commemorates the arrival of Slavic refugees fleeing from Turkish domination about five centuries ago. The festival continues in the early afternoon with the auctioning of homemade products. You may want to finish the month in the town of San Martino in Pensilis, population five thousand, about 30 miles (45 kilometers) northeast of Campobasso as explained below.

The high point in the feast of Saint Leo (the town's Patron Saint) is the Carrese, a race in which trained oxen haul farm wagons. It is so exhausting that oxen teams change after two and a half miles (four kilometers). Historically this race started when various groups of people were arguing about the ownership of valued local relics. They put the disputed relics on a wagon and let the oxen decide the route. Those wise oxen chose San Martino in Pensilis. Each cart includes three drivers accompanied by a horse and rider to ensure everyone's safety. The onlookers cheer their favorite team in Italian and Albanese, a version of Albanian spoken by many of the residents. There is plenty of food and local wine. The winner leads a parade back into town.

The month of May begins in many Molise towns and villages with festivals dedicated to Santa Maria, San Filippo and San Giacomo, often accompanied by fireworks. The little city of Larino, population about 7 thousand, hosts the Feste 'e San Pard (San Pardo Festival and Procession) towards the end of the month. This procession includes over one hundred carts, which belong to local families. Each cart is richly festooned with flowers and pulled by two white oxen. The parade starts off at the historic town center, passes by the cathedral and cemetery, and terminates at a historic church. You can ascertain the local pecking order by noting the carts' position in the procession.
